out of san francisco. where police are involved in a standoff with an armed man. kron 4's scott rates is live in the richmond district with the latest. scott? >> reporter: >> oi just checked with police and they are still confirming that he is barricaded himself inside. it is still a very active scene. this is as far up as i can get. as i show you this is the crisis negotiation team. they are trying to get some progress. several swat team members running across the street. this started at 3:00 p.m. and there were shots fired inside this home. they heard someone screaming and i also saw the bullet hole right through that front door toward that is when officers walked out and this began. and some of these nearby homes have been evacuated. there also reports from police that this man is mentally unstable and is in sight alone. in side-alone. we can see the swat team. and running across the street it looks like they are going right through this neighborhood. and there are several swat team members they could be possibly gaining entrance. i will keep you updated and i will stay out here. >

of people gathered along san francisco's waterfront at midnight to ring in the new year. but it was a holiday celebration marred by violence. ktvu's alex savidge tells us a 12-year-old boy was among three people who were shot. alex? >> reporter: well, as thousands packed the waterfront last night, someone opened fire here on embarcadero close to pier 2. a total of two people shot here. one of them a 12-year-old boy. he was hit in the foot but is expected to be okay. now, this happened about 11:30 last night, as people were waiting for the fireworks show to begin in san francisco. along with the boy wounded, a man was grazed in the hip by a bullet. san francisco police say both of those shooting victims are being treated for nonlife- threatening injuries. at this point, it's unclear why the shooter began to fire or who their intended target was. just about an hour before that, there was another shooting along the waterfront. this one close to fisherman's wharf, near jefferson and mason. one person shot in the hand. police say that person's injuries request are not life- t

in the bay area now, 6:09, san francisco police are taking a new look at a cold case that involved a child who disappeared nearly 30 years ago. the renewed search sent officers to the haight-ashbury neighborhood. they are searching around a house on masonic avenue near page street there. and cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is on the scene with what neighbors remember about the time kevin collins went missing. >> reporter: good morning. there were some bones found in the duplex behind me. they are animal bones but further analysis is necessary. 10-year-old kevin collins was seen a block from here on the way home from school in 1984. witnesses say he was pushed into a car with two teenagers. police aren't saying why they have renewed their search for kevin but we do know cadaver dogs found bones under the concrete floor of the garage in the duplex. police say a man who lived in the house at the time matched the description of a man seen talking to kevin. that person has since died. but we spoke to a neighbor who knew the two men who lived here back in '84. >

and san francisco both held gun buy-packs and the results were impressive. oakland collected 300 guns. san francisco had 296 guns turned in. so nearly 600 guns - off the streets in one day on decemner 16th. people were given $200 dollars in exchange for their guns - the money coming from non-profit groups and private donations. >> pam: in san francisco, two pieces of gun control legislation were introduced to the board of supervisors. the first bans the possession of military style ammunition, such as hollow- point bullets. the sale of those bullets is already illegal. this action would make having them a misdeamenor. the second requires police notification, when someone in san francisco buys 500- rounds of ammunition or more. this includes online purchases. the supervisor sponsoring the changes says, they will make a difference. >> i deal with it every day. i check in with my police station captains about what was the violence that happened in the week? the number one is that they pulling off fire alarms. and ak-47s even getting cleared off the streets. the work continues, weather or not
